I'll be frank, I always liked the idea behind Fiverr.com.
Only a few clicks and a customer can put an order using a freelancer based on a particular set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a cost. A significant one.
That is only the couple freelance platforms at which buyers are given free reign to abuse, sabotage and outright blackmail vendors any way that they like.
In this post, I'd like to talk about a new bad experience as a vendor on Fiverr, and I chose to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Regular Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
(I have been guiding her building up a reputable accounts, and how to go above and beyond every last order. Everything stated is that her doing, I am only an audience )
In cases like this, she'd just gotten another $5 order on her emblem gig, which seemed to be similar to any other... or so we believed.
The purchase was fulfilled in good time, and my girlfriend had included a bonus logo concept as well as the source file (that is usually a part of the costlier bundle ).
The client"loved" one of those concepts and so we moved to deliver her the appropriates file sizes, as stated in the final description.
The client came back asking for a social media kit to decide on the emblem, something that is clearly not available as part of her or his gig.
In my advice, my girlfriend chose to provide the further job, despite not getting paid any extra for this.
After that, the customer responded with much more requirements and a few adjustments to the social networking files.
At this point, she concurred enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this person, they were clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
That is when the customer went from simply overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend's Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took a while to contemplate a response and reach out to Fiverr service for help, the customer did eventually go on and leave a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to show her he/she wasn't Fiverr Review - Legit Freelance Marketplace or Scam? - Aaron And ... kidding.
Soon after, while waiting on Fiverr's response to the support query, the customer paid an extra $10 for the social media kit.
Needless to say, the payment was accompanied by still another threat.
At this point, all I wanted to do was go all Liam Neeson and hunt this person down so I could punch them in the face.
But, in the moment, I had hope that Fiverr service could step in and save my girlfriend out of that PITA client.
When the response came back from Fiverr service, they told her they couldn't Fiverr Review – The Hyper and Fun Way of Making Money Online force the buyer to accept the order.
Alright, that's fair enough. (though the purchaser accepted it, technically.)
They also proposed drawing up a list for the purchaser to reveal the job has been done in accordance with the gig requirements.
Frankly, this reply simply didn't cut the mustard.
My girlfriend hauled in her initial email the customer was attempting to extort her for free work out the agreed terms, by making a negative review if she didn't comply.
Obviously, it wasn't really about the work, it was about seeking protection from an abusive customer who had been blatantly pushing his luck.
Their answer didn't provide us some confidence that Fiverr actually knew , and even in this stage we felt like they did not want to get involved.
At exactly the same time, she responded to the buyers most recent danger, explaining that she would not continue to operate with them unless the feedback has been changed/removed.
(Again, this will be feedback that was obviously and intentionally made to bully her to supplying work out the agreed terms.)
A fair request by anyones standards, right?
Rather than acknowledge what the buyer had done up until this point, Fiverr immediately turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the one breaking all of the rules.
Because she had asked the client to change their opinions, she was no longer entitled to some help from Fiverr support.
It is possible to imagine how we both felt studying this.
Everything that the buyer had said and done before her very last message was now being swept under the rug -- like never happened whatsoever.
Fiverr basically chose to support a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend using a permanent stain in an account she had worked so tough to accumulate.
If everything that happened was not upsetting enough, it's knowing that this person is still running rampant on Fiverr, preying on defensless vendors without a sprinkling of repercussion.
And believe me, there are plenty of buyers doing exactly that on Fiverr, knowing they could and will eliminate it.
Well, as most this was happening, I did a little investigating to find out if some other vendors went through a similar ordeal with a purchaser.
Very quickly, I found a number of almost identical cases on the Fiverr forum outdated years ago. (that's correct, years.)
This is clearly something that's been happening for quite a while and it all stems from giving buyers also much power over sellers.
If there's 1 thing I have learned about Fiverr, it is that clients are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Regardless of how long you put into a job, or how hard you've worked on itor perhaps how long you handled communication during a dispute, even if it actually comes down to it... freelancers have little to no protection.
Even if it's a very clear cut situation in your favour, there's still every chance the client will come out at the top. All it takes it one tiny thing you"did wrong" in accordance with their own conditions of service and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Looking at the evidence, it's clear to me Fiverr is well aware of what is happening, yet is still inclined to settle back and let it happen.
A Final Message To Fiverr. If you're a decision maker in Fiverr and you're reading this, article I urge you to seriously reevaluate your present support processes for freelancers.
It is not right that somebody can place all the time and effort in to establishing an account and also over-delivering at every conceivable chance, just to be shot down from the very people you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I do not wish to abandon Fiverr. I don't need to be telling folks to avoid your system.
But after everything that has happened, you have not left me any decision.
Until something is done to protect freelancers from this sort of abuse, I will continue to spread this article and do whatever I can to stop others from falling victim to your one-sided support staff.
The second you truly do something about this and also give freelancers a means to fight , I will be happy to update this article.
